How Can I Ask For More When I Already Have So Much?

Inspired by the Little Mermaid.

Look at this stuff

Isn't it neat?

Wouldn't you think my collection's complete?

Wouldn't you think I'm the girl

The girl who has everything?

Look at this trove

Treasures untold

How many wonders can one cavern hold?

Looking around here you'd think

Sure, she's got everything

I've got gadgets and gizmos a-plenty

I've got whozits and whatzits galore

You want thingamabobs?

I've got twenty!

But who cares?

No big deal

I want more

At some point, we’ve all heard it:

Sit down, sit still, quit squirming.

Be grateful for what you have. Don’t be greedy. How could you possibly ask for more at a time like this?

Haven’t you had enough?

Geeze, save some for the rest of us!

I, for one, have never been much for being quiet or sitting still.

I also know I have a lot. My life is nothing short of abundant - a beautiful family, a comfortable home, a business that grows more successful by the month, a body that can do all sorts of crazy things.

I am grateful for what I have, every bit of it.

In the same breath, I can’t help but ask myself: Is this it?

Is this all there is? I feel like there should be more.

I’m sure I can have more - after all, there are people out there with more than me, why can’t I be one of them? It sounds rather greedy, doesn’t it?

Put it to you in a different way: I want my business to grow even more. On the surface, of course, this means more money. More money means I am helping more customers and students - it means the thing I’m good at is reaching more people than ever.

Growing the business means I can hire more people to take things off my plate, which means I can give more time and attention to Brooks and Pat.

If you ever find yourself asking: is this it? It’s probably not.

The trick is to figure out what “more” looks like to you. Is it cash in the bank or hours in bed (with someone?)? Is it more freedom from your job, your family, your life?

Instead of just saying “I want more,” try saying, “I want more of this.”

The thing that lights you up, that gets you going and gets you off. What is it to get more of that thing? It may take a bit of reverse engineering to figure out what it is and how to get more of it, but the payout will go on for years.

Another way to look at it: legacy. As in: it’s not about having MORE things in your life, but having a way to leave a legacy. If you have more time with your family, that’s more memories for the scrapbook that they will remember for decades. A bigger business means helping more people and changing how things are done in your industry - not just today, but for future generations.

Wanting more of the right stuff today ultimately means you’re leaving a legacy down the line.

And yes, you deserve it.

No need for guilt; this isn’t greed. This is exactly what you deserve. Because the more you have, the more you can give.
