There is NOTHING predictable about perimenopause.
From when it will start.
To how long it will last.
To what your experience will be like.
The best thing you can do is educate yourself on what perimenopause is and what is happening to your body during this time of transition. And once it starts, try not to compare your experience to anyone else’s.
To prepare for perimenopause, build as much muscle as possible. Do it while you have the hormones! Stop chronic dieting. Learn how to manage your stress.
And when you’re in perimenopause, add on get adequate sleep, eliminate alcohol as much as possible, and focus on doing less, but doing it better.
This can be a confusing time in a woman’s life, but it can also be very empowering because you are evolving into the woman you were meant to be. This is why @lisamdeluca and I started the REVIVE program to empower you through perimenopause and beyond.
My body in perimenopause.
My perimenopause symptoms really kicked in when I was 42.
A 22 day cycle followed by a skipped period in January of 2022 had me buying a pregnancy test for the first time in my life.
My hair was thinning, right along with my patience. I never had PMS before, but bloating, breast tenderness and mood swings became a regular thing.
I enlisted the help of my good friend Dr. Jennifer Horton and started to adjust my lifestyle. Dr. Jen got me on a supplement protocol that helped with mitochondrial function and hormone support (not HRT) as well as some gut dysbiosis.
I just looked back at my food log from that time and I was eating at the high end of my maintenance. The scale wasn’t necessarily going up a lot, but my body composition was changing. I was just holding onto more water and now I can see a difference in my face as well. Knowing how I loosely track, I was probably in a slight surplus because at the time I was getting hella strong in the gym.
I started lifting weights less days.
I added in sprint interval training.
I further eliminated alcohol.
I started putting more focus on my pre-and post workout nutrition, eating the majority of my carbohydrates before, and after my training sessions.
And it was not until the middle of this year that I was actually able to lower my stress. I was trying from 2022 to 2023, but extraneous factors were elevating my stress.
There is no ill will towards my body in 2022. I felt comfortable in my skin. But looking back at pictures, perimenopause was definitely having an impact on my physique.
I’m sharing this with you to let you know that changes to your body and perimenopause are completely normal. It’s just like puberty for us middle-aged women!
I’m also sharing to let you know that once you understand what is happening with your body, you can still improve your body composition, if that’s something that you want to do.
Perimenopause is not a death sentence. But you will have to ride the waves. Please note: every single woman’s perimenopause experience will be different. Some of us are going to have a very hard time, others will make it through barely scathed.
